Storyline:In 1947 Lord "Dickie" Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) was commissioned by the British king to ensure that India became independent on the ground. The Lord, his wife Lady Edwina Mountbatten (Gillian Anderson) and daughter Pamela (Lily Travers) move to the sumptuous Indian Headquarters and live there on the upper floors while the large servants are housed below, including the young Hindu Jeet Kumar (Manish Dayal) and his great love, the Muslima Aalia Noor (Huma Qureshi). While Mountbatten is negotiating with the political elite about the future of an independent India and about the division of the country into a Hindu and a Muslim part, conflict between the Hindus and the Muslims in the country and in the palace is ever more frequent: the hero-worshiped Gandhi (Neeraj Kabi) and the Indian National Congress under Nehru (Tanveer Ghani) want a unitary state, Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Denzil Smith), who represents the Muslim minority, wants a new Islamic state Pakistan.
