Storyline:Two families meet shortly after the end of World War II in the Mississippi Delta: The family of Hap (Rob Morgan) and Florence Jackson (Mary J. Blige) has been cultivating a piece of land for generations and trying to build a free, self-determined life. As African Americans, however, they have it hard in the racist south of the United States. The McAllans, on the other hand, are white and have just moved from Memphis to the Mississippi Delta and have yet to come to terms with the more uncivilized customs, the monotonous life and hard work on a farm. However, Henry (Jason Clarke) still has big dreams for his family, but his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) is far less happy. When two family-born sons, Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell), cautiously make friends, an escalation of the smoldering conflict seems inevitable ...
