Storyline:John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) has no idea where his life is going, and spends most of his time drinking and partying. Storyline:Therese (Rooney Mara) dreams of a job as a set designer at the theater, but instead she's with Richard (Jake Lacy), whom she does not actually love. So she struggles through the New York of the 50s and tries to keep afloat with a job in a department store. One day she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), who immediately gives Therese her address so that her purchases can be delivered there. Therese Carol sends out a card for Christmas at which she unexpectedly receives an answer. Connected by the feeling of loneliness, the two women begin to spend more and more time together. Therese develops strong feelings for Carol - much to the displeasure of Carol's husband Harge (Kyle Chandler). He threatens to deprive his wife of custody of their daughter. All he needs is solid evidence of the secret love of women. Harge pulls out all the stops and hires a private detective, whom he puts on Therese and Carol.
Storyline:Dr. Grene (Eric Bana) is to investigate the 100-year-old Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave) - actually only as a routine, so that their insanity for a hospital transfer can be officially confirmed. The old lady is accused of killing her child and allegedly mentally ill. But Dr. Grene is fascinated by her personality and begins to deal with her case in more detail. He finds that all the allegations are unfounded and hides behind Rose in reality an incredible love story. He comes across old records and dives more and more into the past of Rose. Can he bring the truth to light and prove the innocence of Rose?
Storyline:At one point, mid-thirties Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) and 13-year-old Una (Ruby Stokes) had a passionate affair. The forbidden relationship between the two ended when Ray Una was finally allowed to join in the escape and was subsequently arrested and sentenced to four years in prison. But then Una (now: Rooney Mara) accidentally discovers Ray 15 years later on a newspaper clipping and one day unannounced emerges at Ray's job. Since he served his sentence, he has changed his name and married, trying to lead a normal life as a senior executive in a factory. Storyline:At a party of influential producer and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender), hopeful up and coming musicians Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling) get to know each other. Faye has recently started an affair with Cook in the hope of better career prospects, and BV is Cook's latest discovery, but they are still starting a relationship - but without BV knowing about Faye and Cook. But the love triangle does not last long, because Cook gets to know the waitress Rhonda (Natalie Portman) and seduces her. But when BV learns about Faye's past with Cook, they split up. But in the lively music scene of Austin, the two quickly find a new love: BV gets to know the also freshly separated Amanda (Cate Blanchett), while Faye begins a relationship with the French Zoey (Bérénice Marlohe).
Storyline:The late C (Casey Affleck) returns as a ghost to his grieving wife M (Rooney Mara). He remains in the common house to comfort her with his presence and share in their everyday life, but quickly realizes that he is stuck in the intermediate world. Unable to leave this place, he has to watch his wife live on without him and slip away from him more and more. But slowly he manages to break away, and he embarks on a cosmic journey, where he has to deal with the riddles of life, to find peace and to find out what it means to become a memory after death and to leave a lasting legacy.
