Storyline:After the Scottish king died without successor to the throne, there is unrest in Scotland in the late 13th century. King Edward I of England (Patrick McGoohan) uses the dispersal of the Scottish nobility to his advantage and tries to seize their land. But despite the efforts of the Scottish nobility and the crackdown on the Scottish civilian population, he can not sustainably consolidate his position of power. William Wallace (Mel Gibson) is born into this troubled time and after the assassination of his closest family members raised by his uncle, who takes him on his travels through Europe and not only reading and writing, but also French, Latin and dealing with the Sword teaches. Wallace returns as a peace-loving man to his homeland and wants nothing to do with public affairs. When English troops execute his wife (Catherine McCormack), he swears revenge on the occupiers and sets out to lead his countrymen to freedom.
