Storyline:Spring 1889: The New York painter Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain) has been a widow for a year now. In order to finally leave her grief behind, she embarks on a new project and travels from New York to North Dakota to make a portrait of the legendary Sioux tribal Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes). With her self-confident and modern attitude and her commitment to the Native Americans, she makes on the spot many enemies, especially the Colonel Groves (Sam Rockwell). As Catherine and Sitting Bull begin to make friends, the Colonel goes out of his way to drive out the last remaining indigenous people from the area. Catherine, who has now been given the Indian name "Woman's Ahead," has to decide what to do in the fight for freedom and humanity.
